Amy Hunt secured her fourth European Championships gold medal on Saturday in Munich, completing a remarkable comeback from a career-threatening injury. The 24-year-old British sprinter dominated the 200m final, crossing the line in 22.05 seconds, a personal best and the fastest time in the world this year.
Historic Victory in Munich
Hunt's victory in the Olympic Stadium was her fourth consecutive European title, a feat achieved by only a handful of athletes in the history of the championships. She led from the start, powering around the bend and holding off a strong challenge from Dutch rival Dafne Schippers, who finished second in 22.18 seconds.
"It's a dream come true," Hunt said in a post-race interview. "After everything I've been through, to be standing here with another gold is beyond words. The crowd was incredible, and I just wanted to give them a show."
Overcoming Adversity
The win is especially significant given Hunt's recent struggles. In 2024, she suffered a torn Achilles tendon that sidelined her for 14 months and raised doubts about her future in the sport. She returned to competition in June this year, and her rapid rise back to the top has been one of the stories of the championships.
Her coach, Rana Reider, praised her resilience: "Amy is the toughest athlete I've ever worked with. She never doubted she'd be back, and she's proven everyone wrong."
British Sprinting Renaissance
Hunt's gold adds to a successful championships for the British team, which has now claimed 12 medals, including five golds. Her performance follows Dina Asher-Smith's victory in the 100m, and the two are expected to form a formidable relay team in the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo next year.
"We've got a great group of sprinters right now," Hunt said. "The rivalry in training pushes us all to be better, and I think we're going to be a force to be reckoned with on the world stage."
Hunt's next target is the 100m, an event she has not contested at a major championship since 2022. She hinted that she may double up in Tokyo, saying, "I'm in the shape of my life, so why not?"
The European Championships conclude on Sunday, with Hunt expected to anchor the British 4x100m relay team.
