A South London pensioner has expressed sheer joy after receiving the keys to a brand-new flat, built precisely where his former home once stood before demolition. John Finn, who previously resided in the 1970s Mais House on Sydenham Hill, is the inaugural tenant to settle into Bean Tree Court, a freshly completed development that has replaced the old structure.
From Demolition to Delight: A New Beginning
John Finn's journey began when his original home was torn down as part of a comprehensive regeneration initiative. However, in a heartening turn of events, he was offered the opportunity to relocate into one of the new residences constructed on the same site. Upon viewing his new one-bedroom flat, John was overwhelmed with emotion, likening the experience to "winning the lottery."
"My reaction when I saw the new flat was 'wow!' It was absolutely beautiful, and I felt like I'd won the lottery," John recounted. "I'm very grateful to the City of London Corporation for giving me this opportunity."
Features and Amenities of the New Development
The Bean Tree Court development is not just a single residence but a substantial housing project comprising 110 homes designated for social rent. These properties are finished to a high specification, boasting contemporary kitchens, generous living spaces, and energy-efficient designs aimed at providing comfortable and affordable housing for individuals and families alike.
The development offers a diverse mix of property types, ranging from one-bedroom flats to four-bedroom townhouses. Notably, 11 of these flats have been specially adapted to accommodate wheelchair users, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all residents.
Community and Council Collaboration
This regeneration project was spearheaded by the City of London Corporation in partnership with Lewisham Council. The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to addressing housing needs within the community. Lewisham Council contributed £1.65 million in funding to support the delivery of these 110 genuinely affordable homes at Sydenham Hill.
Cllr James-J Walsh, Lewisham Council Cabinet Member for Inclusive Regeneration and Planning, emphasized the significance of the project: "In Lewisham, we are committed to unlocking new homes for Lewisham residents. It's been great to see the project grow from the first dig on site to completed homes that will soon be lived in by local families on our housing waiting list."
Personal Touches and Future Plans
For John Finn, the new flat is more than just a place to live; it's a space that inspires creativity and wellness. He particularly appreciates the balcony, where he plans to spend considerable time writing. Additionally, the proximity to Dulwich Park is a major plus, as he enjoys jogging there regularly.
"I really like the balcony and will be spending a lot of time out there writing. It's also really close to Dulwich Park, where I go jogging," John shared. "The first thing I'll do when I move in is to get on my knees and thank God."
