London's 'oldest house' in Walthamstow now on rent for £2,600 a month
Walthamstow's 'oldest house' rents for £2,600 a month

The Ancient House, a timber-framed property in Walthamstow believed to date back to the 15th century, is back on the rental market at £2,600 a month, a £400 increase from its last advertised price in 2022. The Grade II-listed house on Church Lane is being let through local estate agent Estates East.

The two-storey, end-of-terrace home, located in Walthamstow Village, includes two bedrooms, two en-suite bathrooms, and a shared courtyard. When last advertised, the ground floor featured a reception room and kitchen, with an overhanging window on part of the first floor and a red-brick wall near the neighbouring property on Orford Road.

History and renovation

Ancient House is reported to have been built around 1435, during the reign of Henry VI and the Hundred Years' War, making its walls older than both William Shakespeare and Elizabeth I. At that time, Walthamstow was a small village in the Essex countryside.

The building has served various purposes over the centuries, including as a police station, armoury, builders' yard, private house, and a local museum. It stands opposite St Mary's church and has become a much-loved local landmark.

Modern interior, historic exterior

After years of dilapidation, the property underwent an extensive renovation that modernised the interior while preserving its rustic charm. Exposed timber beams remain a feature in the bedrooms, and the kitchen is described as extremely modern without losing its 'countryside' feel.

The property is situated in a peaceful part of Walthamstow Village, where the surrounding area reportedly does not feel like London. Further details about the current listing are not yet available online.
