Mother Demands Mandatory Safety Standards After Son's Fatal High-Rise Fall
The grieving mother of a young man who fell to his death when a communal railing gave way has issued a stark warning that this "completely preventable" tragedy "could've happened to anybody." Fiona Garrett is now spearheading a campaign calling for mandatory safety standards in high-rise buildings, determined that her son's death must "mean something."
A Catastrophic and Preventable Incident
Joshua Robbins, aged 23, fell five floors from the communal landing outside his father's flat on Newton Street in Holborn, London, on the evening of January 29th. The incident occurred as Joshua leaned on the railing to check if a pizza delivery had arrived for them.
"He literally went out and put his elbow on to the communal railings by the lift," Ms. Garrett recounted in an emotional interview. "Just to sort of put his head round and go, 'oh, it's for us up here'. He was giving instructions - and the railing just gave way and Josh plunged five floors to his death."
Despite the rapid response of the London Ambulance Service and police officers called to the Holland and Thurston Dwellings just before 8:30 pm, Joshua was pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics reportedly stated his injuries were "not compatible with life."
Launch of the 'No More Falls' Campaign
In the wake of this devastating loss, Joshua's family has established the "No More Falls" campaign. The initiative is demanding compulsory safety regulations for high-rise buildings that feature similar communal set-ups, balconies, or window boxes.
"I want his death to mean something, he can't just disappear and have no reason behind it," Ms. Garrett asserted, expressing her profound grief and determination. "I want people to actually understand that this isn't going to go away. I don't want to hear 'lessons learnt.' I don't want to be palmed off with nonsense. I want to see actual action."
She emphasized that her family deserves concrete change, stating, "That's the least I deserve; our family deserves that. Joshua's life mattered, so his death matters even more."
Trauma, Investigation, and Official Responses
Ms. Garrett revealed that Joshua's father, who witnessed the aftermath, is "deeply deeply traumatized" and struggling with "a big dose of survivor's guilt." The incident occurred within Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's constituency. Ms. Garrett confirmed she received a reply from him which she described as seemingly "really personal and... genuine," rather than a standard holding letter. However, she stressed she needs substantive action, not mere platitudes.
Pippa Fleetwood-Read, Chief Executive of the Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association (ISHA), which manages the building, offered condolences in a statement.
"Joshua's tragic death at the end of January has been deeply distressing for everyone who knew him," she said. "We offer our heartfelt and sincerest condolences to his parents, family, friends and neighbours."
The statement outlined support measures for residents, including counselling, a daily on-site presence, and weekly written updates. Fleetwood-Read added that ISHA cannot comment further while the police investigation is ongoing.
Ongoing Police Investigation and Family's Plea
The Metropolitan Police confirmed their investigation remains in its early stages. Officers are consulting with expert witnesses, including a forensic structural engineer, and conducting interviews with witnesses and residents.
"These enquiries can take some time, given the nature of the investigation and complexities," a police spokesperson noted. The coroner has been notified, and a full report will follow the conclusion of the police probe. The family continues to receive updates and support from specialist officers and has requested privacy during this difficult period.
The affected area, including the space where the railing failed, has been boarded up as the community and a devastated family seek answers and, above all, meaningful reform to prevent future, similar tragedies.
