Why Deal is considered friendly for retirees
Explaining why Deal made the list, World Atlas said: "A converted Congregational church halfway along Deal High Street does more community work than most buildings twice its size."
"The Landmark Centre opened as a church in 1882 and is now run by the Deal and Walmer Community Association, with three halls, meeting rooms, the Spires Cafe, and a bar that puts on live music at weekends," the organisation added. "This lively hub is also home to Deal Radio, the town's community station, and is volunteer-driven."
World Atlas also highlighted the Astor Community Theatre, which programmes touring theatrical productions, live music, film screenings and traditional Christmas pantomimes. Free music sessions are held at the Deal Memorial Bandstand on Walmer Green every Sunday afternoon between May and September, with brass and swing bands travelling in from across the country.
Local landmarks and visitor attractions
With its pastel-coloured houses and cobbled streets, this seaside town on the Kent Coast between Dover and Ramsgate is slightly quieter than some of its seaside counterparts. One landmark Deal is known for is its castle, first built in 1539 by King Henry VIII. This Tudor fortress was used right up until the 18th century, and today visitors can walk around its remains with a ticket costing £7.70 for adults and £4 for children.
Visitors can also explore a similar fortress, Walmer Castle and Gardens, located in the neighbouring town of Walmer, with landscaped gardens to explore.
