Pro-EU campaigners protested in London this month, as letters to the Guardian call on the UK to face the reasons behind the 2016 Brexit vote to heal the nation's divisions.
Brexit campaign built on lies, says professor
Prof Berthold Schoene of Manchester Metropolitan University wrote that the leave campaign was built on lies and manipulation, and that no list of Brexit benefits has emerged. He noted that none of the 'mendacious opportunists' who drove the leave campaign have been held accountable.
Schoene, who applied for British citizenship weeks before the referendum after 25 years in the UK, said he was spared the 'nightmarish bureaucratic toxicity' that consumed many European friends and colleagues. He urged Britain to undertake a process of 'Brexitbewältigung'—coming to terms with the causes, consequences, and false promises of Brexit.
Warning to Gove and Johnson remembered
Ian Arnott of Peterborough recalled a 2014 article by Jonathan Freedland warning Michael Gove and Boris Johnson that 'we won't forget what you did.' Arnott said that view has been vindicated, adding that Johnson got his just deserts but he is less sure about Gove. He expressed hope that the Makerfield byelection result would set back Nigel Farage and his party's rise.
The letters respond to Guardian articles marking 10 years since the Brexit vote, highlighting ongoing frustration with the referendum's legacy and the lack of accountability for those who campaigned for leave.
