Texas Lawmakers Clash Over DHS Funding as Airport Delays Worsen

Republican Senator John Cornyn and Democratic Congressman Greg Casar engaged in a heated exchange outside Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Monday, sparring over funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The confrontation occurred as the partial shutdown of the agency entered its second month, leading to significant disruptions at airports across the United States.

Airport Showdown Highlights Political Stalemate

Cornyn, a longtime Texas senator facing a tough primary battle against Attorney General Ken Paxton, visited the airport to deliver lunch to unpaid Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees. Upon arrival, he encountered Casar, whose district includes Austin and who was reportedly there to catch a flight back to Washington D.C. The encounter quickly escalated into a public debate in front of reporters.

"Why don't you tell your Democrats to vote to pay these poor people?" Cornyn demanded of Casar. Casar responded, "Let's do it," prompting Cornyn to retort, "No, you do it!" The two then talked over each other, with Casar, who chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus, arguing that Democrats had proposed legislation to fund only the TSA while broader immigration enforcement issues were negotiated.

Broader Implications of the Shutdown

Cornyn dismissed this approach as "not acceptable" and emphasized the critical role of TSA agents in public safety. He urged Democrats to vote for full DHS funding, stating, "These people are keeping us safe. Tell the Democrats to vote for funding the DHS." The shutdown, which began in mid-February, has left TSA employees without pay for weeks, resulting in lengthy security lines and pleas from airline CEOs to resolve the standoff.

In a later statement, Casar accused Cornyn of refusing to compromise on immigration reforms to secure political backing, particularly from former President Donald Trump, in his Senate race. "He's bootlicking so hard to get Donald Trump's endorsement that he's willing to go to any length, no matter how degrading it is," Casar said. "And to me, that is really sad from the senator who we used to think of as a little more independent, a little bit more Texas tough."

Legislative Efforts and Stalled Negotiations

The funding impasse stems from Democratic demands for new restrictions on federal immigration enforcement, including requirements for agents to show identification, stop wearing masks, and cease street detentions. Cornyn argued that DHS funding should be reauthorized immediately, with immigration debates continuing afterward. "We can talk about that after people start getting paid again," he said. "Those debates will not end when they get paid, but it just means we won't be holding these poor people hostage who have nothing to say about what those reforms will look like."

Recent legislative attempts have failed to break the deadlock:

  • Democrats tried to pass a Senate bill funding DHS operations outside immigration enforcement but were blocked by Republicans.
  • Republicans proposed a DHS funding bill without reforms, but it lacked sufficient Democratic support to overcome a filibuster.

Adding to the tension, Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced plans to circulate a petition to force a vote on similar legislation in the Republican-controlled chamber. The petition requires 218 signatures to succeed, with Democrats holding 214 seats, highlighting the narrow margins and intense partisanship at play.

As the shutdown persists, airport delays are expected to worsen, putting pressure on lawmakers to find a swift resolution. The standoff underscores deep divisions over immigration policy and government funding, with real-world consequences for workers and travelers alike.
