Police in Austin, Texas, are urging residents to remain indoors after two teenage gunmen carried out at least 10 random drive-by shootings, leaving four people injured. The attacks, which occurred on May 17, 2026, have prompted a shelter-in-place warning across the state capital.
Suspects at Large
Authorities have released a photo of one of the teenage suspects and are asking for the public's help in locating them. The suspects are believed to have switched vehicles and may now be driving a white Kia Optima. Police have also linked the crimes to a black or dark blue 2012 Hyundai Sonata with a broken right-side passenger window. Additionally, the pair have stolen a gold Hyundai sedan and a silver Mazda four-door during their shooting spree.
Details of the Attacks
Austin Police Department Chief Lisa Davis confirmed that four individuals were shot, with one sustaining serious injuries and the other three suffering minor injuries. The shootings appeared to be random, with at least two fire stations among the targets. Chief Davis urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid leaving their cars unlocked or keys inside vehicles.
“At this time, we can confirm that four individuals have been shot, one has sustained serious injury, and the other three minor injuries,” Davis said during a press conference. “In addition, I want to remind people to not leave their cars unlocked. What we are seeing are these cars are being stolen. Do not leave your keys in the vehicle or your key fobs in the vehicle. Again, please remain vigilant. If you see something suspicious, call 911 immediately.”
Public Assistance Sought
Detectives described a possible suspect as a White or Hispanic male in his late teens. They believe the suspects may be traveling in a white KIA Optima. Police have asked the public to stay alert and call 911 if they see the suspected vehicle or know the whereabouts of the suspects. They warned the public not to approach them.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine a motive for the attacks. Residents are advised to stay indoors and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
