An 18-year-old man has been formally charged with the murder of a university student in Leicester, following a fatal stabbing incident that occurred in the city centre earlier this week.
Charges Laid in Fatal Stabbing Case
Harper Dennis, of West Drayton, London, will appear before Leicester Magistrates' Court tomorrow facing a murder charge in connection with the death of 20-year-old Khaleed Oladipo. Leicestershire Police confirmed the charges on Friday evening, stating that Dennis is also charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.
Additionally, the 18-year-old faces two separate counts of possession of an offensive weapon in a private place, though police have clarified these charges are unrelated to the ongoing murder investigation.
Tragic Loss of Promising Student
Khaleed Oladipo, a second-year cyber security student at De Montfort University, died in hospital on Tuesday night after sustaining a single stab wound to the chest. The incident occurred in Leicester city centre, with emergency services responding to reports of a serious assault.
In an emotional tribute released through police, Mr Oladipo's family described their profound grief, stating they could not "begin to put into words how sad we are to have lost Khaleed." They remembered him as "an extremely loved son, brother, uncle, boyfriend and friend" who was deeply cherished by all who knew him.
Family Remembers Football-Loving Student
The family's statement revealed that Mr Oladipo was a passionate Arsenal supporter who had played football since the age of four. They believe he was returning home to watch a match when the tragic incident occurred.
"Khaleed was a good boy who loved his family," the statement continued. "He was in his second year at university, and we were so proud of him. We want to thank the members of the public who stopped to try and help Khaleed and the ambulance service and hospital staff who did all they could to try and save him."
Police Investigation Continues
Leicestershire Police have confirmed the investigation remains active, with officers continuing to gather evidence and speak to witnesses. The force has appealed for anyone with information about the incident to come forward as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragic death.
The case has sent shockwaves through the university community and wider Leicester area, with students and staff at De Montfort University being offered support services following the devastating news.
