Sky's ITV takeover: Good news for Coronation Street and Emmerdale fans
Sky's ITV takeover: Good news for Corrie and Emmerdale

Sky has agreed to buy ITV for £1.6 billion, sparking fears for the future of beloved soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale. However, fans can breathe a sigh of relief: ITV Studios, which produces both shows, is not part of the sale, meaning the soaps will continue as usual.

Deal Details and Impact on Viewers

The proposed transaction between Sky and ITV brings together two major media organisations. ITV channels and ITVX will remain free-to-air, ensuring audiences can still enjoy their favourite programmes, including national and regional news. Sky and ITV Media and Entertainment aim to combine free-to-air broadcasting, advertising-funded streaming, and subscription television with Sky's wider portfolio.

ITV currently reaches around 40 million people weekly, with over 16.5 million monthly digital users. Combined with Sky, the new business will account for approximately 20% of in-home viewing in the UK, second only to the BBC and ahead of YouTube.

Sky CEO Calls It a 'Defining Moment'

Dana Strong, CBE, Sky Group CEO, described the deal as a 'defining moment for British media.' She stated: 'We have huge respect for the transformation the ITV team has delivered, particularly its successful move into streaming through ITVX, which has brought fantastic British content to millions of viewers across the UK. Bringing Sky and ITV Media & Entertainment together combines the very best of free-to-air television, pay TV and streaming, ensuring viewers across the UK continue to enjoy outstanding British programming in a rapidly changing world.'

Soap Fans' Fears Addressed

Recent years have seen budget cuts at both Coronation Street and Emmerdale, leading to cast departures. The axing of shows like Holby City, Doctors, and Neighbours between 2022 and 2025 heightened concerns that the soaps might be next. However, since ITV Studios remains independent, the soaps are safe.

ITV Studios also produces other major shows such as Love Island, I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here!, and even Line of Duty for the BBC, which will remain unaffected.

Future of ITV Content

While content on ITV could gradually move behind a paywall, the company's public service broadcasting licence requires free-to-air service until at least 2034. Some less popular shows might be axed or moved to other platforms, but for now, it's business as usual for Coronation Street and Emmerdale. The soaps remain cornerstones of ITV's output, giving fans reason to be optimistic.
