A booby-trapped backpack exploded in Monaco on Monday evening, injuring a Ukrainian couple and their 13-year-old son. The two adults are in critical condition in a Monaco hospital, according to police.
Explosion at Cuomo Foundation
The blast occurred around 10pm at the entrance of the Cuomo Foundation, a self-described philanthropic organization. CCTV footage reportedly shows a suspect dropping off bags shortly before the explosion, which destroyed the building's entrance.
Police confirmed the victims are Ukrainian. The suspect was seen fleeing toward the nearby French town of Beausoleil, near the border.
Officials call it an attack
While the incident has not been officially declared a terrorist act, local leaders have described it as an attack. Mayor of Nice Eric Ciotti wrote on X: 'The attack carried out this evening is a tragedy that has hit Monaco. Thoughts for the victims, their families, and the people of Monaco. Total support for the security forces and emergency services mobilised.'
Minister of State Christophe Mirmand said, 'This is likely an attack.' He added that the explosive device likely contained bolts and shot. 'The police are currently gathering evidence. This is the first time in history, to my knowledge, that such an act has occurred in the Principality.'
Investigation ongoing
Authorities are gathering evidence and searching for the suspect. The condition of the 13-year-old boy has not been disclosed. This is a developing story.
