A Life of Goodness and Beauty
In an article written for Vogue UK, Susan Everard shares personal anecdotes and photos, including one of Sarah at V Festival in 2010, illustrating her daughter's vibrant spirit. "I love to see her, happy and beautiful, with her whole life ahead of her," writes Ms Everard, recalling a "golden time" after Sarah graduated and returned from travels in Southeast Asia.
Sarah, who worked in marketing in London, was abducted and killed by Wayne Couzens, a serving Metropolitan Police officer at the time. Her murder sparked nationwide outrage and renewed calls for better protection of women and girls from violence and harassment.
Remembering Sarah's Character
Susan Everard emphasizes her daughter's thoughtful and principled nature. "There was a depth to her, she led her life with decency and integrity. She cared about others and worried about us in the pandemic," she writes. She adds that she misses Sarah's goodness, describing her as dependable, highly principled, and someone whose opinion she valued deeply.
Beyond her serious side, Sarah was also remembered for her sense of humor. "She was funny and appreciated the absurd but could also be outraged at injustice and bad behavior," says Mrs Everard. She cherishes memories of Sarah's laugh, their conversations, and even swapping recipes.

Highlighting Sarah's many talents, Susan Everard fondly recalls her daughter as a "beautiful dancer." She notes that Sarah's numerous friendships are a testament to her loving and caring nature. "Most of all, she was a loving and caring young woman; her many friendships are a testament to her lovely nature. She added to the beauty of the world," she expresses.
Ongoing Scrutiny and Police Response
Sarah's murder led to intense scrutiny of the Metropolitan Police, particularly regarding why Couzens remained an officer despite past accusations of indecent exposure, sexual assault, and rape. A Sky News investigation revealed that dozens of officers across the UK have been investigated for rape since Sarah's death, with 17 forces confirming criminal inquiries for sexual offences and 16 for rape allegations.
Metropolitan Police chief Sir Mark Rowley addressed these concerns, stating that the force takes such accusations extremely seriously. "People should be reassured… if there's a criminal allegation of sexual or domestic violence in nature, the starting presumption is an officer is going to be suspended," he told Sky News, noting that 1,500 people have been removed from the Met in three years.
