The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Council has approved the comprehensive upgrade, which includes wider pavements, new lighting systems, and enhanced accessibility features. These changes are designed to make the market more welcoming for all visitors, including those with mobility challenges. Additionally, the project will introduce more greenery and reconfigured parking bays to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
Future-Proofing Against Flooding
A key component of the revamp is the installation of a new Hydrorock drainage system. This innovative solution uses underground tree pits and absorbent materials to store rainwater and slow its flow to drains, addressing the area's vulnerability to flooding. In 2021, heavy rainfall caused severe water damage to local businesses and necessitated temporary relocations for residents, highlighting the urgent need for such measures.
Security and Community Funding
In response to community feedback, the council will replace existing concrete anti-terror barriers with sliding bollards. These barriers were originally installed on advice from the Metropolitan Police but will now be updated to blend better with the street's aesthetic. The funding for this project comes from the Community Infrastructure Levy, a charge collected from developers, ensuring that no local service budgets are diverted.
