Nicola Bulley's Partner Opens Up About Family's Ongoing Trauma Two Years After Tragedy
Paul Ansell, the partner of Nicola Bulley, has given a rare and emotional update about how his family has coped during the two years since the mother-of-two's disappearance and tragic death. Speaking at a lecture at the London School of Economics, Ansell described the overwhelming media scrutiny and social media intrusion that compounded their grief.
The Fateful Morning That Changed Everything
On January 27, 2023, Nicola Bulley began what seemed like an ordinary day. The 45-year-old mortgage advisor dropped her two daughters at primary school, walked their springer spaniel Willow, and took a work call. However, she never returned home. Days later, her body was recovered from the River Wyre in Lancashire.
The disappearance sparked one of the most intensive missing person operations in recent British history. Emergency services deployed drones, helicopters, and search teams across the village of St Michael's on Wyre. A passer-by found Willow running loose, with Nicola's phone and the dog's harness left on a bench near the river.
Media Frenzy and Social Media Storm
As the search unfolded, the case captured national attention, but it also attracted what Ansell described as "ghoulish" interest from social media users. TikTok "sleuths" traveled to the village to retrace Nicola's steps, while conspiracy theories proliferated online. Some even falsely implicated Ansell in his partner's disappearance.
"It was very, very intrusive, which was a horrible thing to experience on its own, let alone when you're experiencing everything that we were," Ansell told the LSE audience. "It can engulf you."
Police Struggles with Unprecedented Attention
A College of Policing report published in November 2023 revealed that Lancashire Police struggled to manage the tidal wave of interest. At the height of the search, 6,500 news stories about Nicola were published worldwide in a single day, while TikTok videos on the topic amassed over 270 million views.
The report noted that social media influencers were able to attend police press conferences without proper accreditation, which the review called a "significant mistake." Negative social media comments on Lancashire Police's pages increased by more than 450 percent during the investigation.
Continuing Anguish After Discovery
Even after Nicola's body was found following a 23-day search, the macabre interest continued. In one particularly disturbing incident, a TikToker filmed Nicola's body being recovered from the river and reportedly earned nearly £900 from the clip.
An inquest concluded on June 27, 2023, that Nicola had fallen into the cold water and drowned almost immediately. Yet conspiracy theories persisted, with some suggesting the scene had been faked.
Family's Ongoing Grief and Resilience
In a documentary released in 2024, Ansell spoke of his "disbelief" that Nicola wouldn't be coming home. "I always expected Nikki to come walking through the door," he said. "I expected it to be just a horrendous nightmare that we were 100 percent gonna wake up from at any minute."
The family released a statement after the inquest, describing the previous months as "extremely tough" and asking for privacy to grieve. They emphasized that Nicola would be remembered as "the brilliant mum, partner, daughter and sister that we all knew and loved so very much."
Ansell revealed that he still struggles to talk about Nicola in the past tense. "I see her in the girls every single day," he said emotionally. "I see all these little mannerisms, and then I just stop sometimes, and I'm, like, flipping heck. That was mummy, you know?"
Broader Implications for Police Investigations
The College of Policing report concluded that social media's impact on police investigations represents "a serious and growing problem" that must be addressed by forces across the UK. The review noted that negative social media attention significantly damaged local community confidence in Lancashire Constabulary.
Two years on, Ansell continues to work as an engineer in Lancashire while raising his daughters with support from family and friends. He remains determined to provide them with as normal a childhood as possible, despite the unimaginable loss that continues to shape their lives.
