NatWest Closes 7 Branches This Week Including 2 in London

NatWest is closing seven branches this week, including two in London, as part of a widespread trend of major banking institutions implementing extensive closure programmes. The shutdowns have raised concerns among customers about their banking needs, particularly for elderly and vulnerable clients.

Closures This Week

The branches closing this week are: Ashford (Middlesex) on May 12, Barnet on May 11, Brentwood on May 13, Eastcote on May 11, Hartlepool on May 14, Manchester Cheetham Hill on May 12, and Portishead on May 12.

Banking Industry Trends

Throughout the country, financial institutions are streamlining their physical presence, leading to an increasing number of customers transitioning to digital and online banking solutions. High street banking providers have faced criticism over persistent closures, with particular worries about elderly and vulnerable clients. However, many banks have assured that alternatives, including banking hubs and community banking officers, will be available to ensure customers continue receiving necessary assistance.

In a statement on its website, NatWest explained: "Banking has changed dramatically in recent years. There's more demand for mobile and online services, allowing you to benefit from a faster and easier way to bank. We understand the closure of your local branch will bring some changes, and we want to make sure you are fully informed and supported every step of the way." Additional information is available through its closure guidance pages.

Broader Impact

The financial institution shut 35 locations during the first four months of 2026, with a further 38 earmarked for closure before year-end. Three additional sites are planned for shutdown in 2027, while two more NatWest branches have been identified without confirmed closure dates. NatWest is not alone in shuttering branches: Santander revealed plans to close 44 branches in January, most already closed, with the remaining 15 set to close this month. Lloyds has similarly confirmed the closure of Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland branches throughout the UK.
