Mitch McConnell, the senior US senator from Kentucky, was admitted to a hospital on Sunday morning, according to a statement from his spokesperson. The brief announcement stated that McConnell is receiving “excellent care,” but no further details were provided regarding his current condition or the reason for the hospitalization.
The 84-year-old Republican leader has faced a series of health challenges in recent years, sparking speculation about whether he will serve out his current Senate term, which ends in January 2027. In February, McConnell was hospitalized for eight days after experiencing “flu-like symptoms.” He has also experienced episodes of freezing up and becoming unresponsive during press conferences.
Since 2023, McConnell has suffered multiple falls. One fall at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington DC resulted in a concussion and broken ribs, requiring the use of a wheelchair temporarily. A spokesperson described the wheelchair use as “purely as a precautionary measure.”
Additional falls in 2023 include a trip while on an international visit to meet with then-Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, and another incident while disembarking from a plane in Washington DC, as reported by CNN at the time.
McConnell’s latest hospitalization renews concerns about his health and his future in the Senate.
