Mishcon de Reya's outgoing managing partner, Kevin Gold, is stepping into the role of senior partner, spearheading a new initiative to bolster the firm's influence on public policy. The move, announced on Tuesday, marks a strategic shift for the London-based law firm as it seeks to engage more directly with government and regulatory bodies.
New Role and Responsibilities
Gold, who has served as managing partner for nine years, will take up the senior partner position on May 1, 2024. In this capacity, he will lead a newly formed 'Policy and Public Affairs' unit, which will focus on shaping legislation in areas such as technology, data protection, and corporate governance. The unit will work alongside Mishcon de Reya's existing practices to provide clients with insights on regulatory changes.
According to the firm, Gold's appointment reflects a growing need for law firms to proactively engage with policymakers. 'Clients are increasingly looking for guidance on how to navigate complex regulatory landscapes,' Gold said. 'This new role allows me to dedicate my time to ensuring our clients' voices are heard in Westminster and Brussels.'
Strategic Shift for the Firm
Mishcon de Reya, known for its work in litigation, corporate, and private client matters, has been expanding its advisory services. The creation of the policy unit is part of a broader trend among law firms to offer more than legal advice, moving into consultancy and public affairs. The firm has hired former government officials to bolster its team, including a former special adviser to the Prime Minister.
The move comes as the legal sector faces increased scrutiny over its role in policymaking. Mishcon de Reya's initiative is seen as a way to differentiate itself from competitors. 'We are not just reacting to laws; we want to help shape them,' said Gold. 'This is about being proactive rather than reactive.'
Impact on Clients and Operations
The policy unit will provide clients with regular briefings on upcoming legislation and offer strategic advice on how to engage with policymakers. Mishcon de Reya has already advised several clients on the UK's Online Safety Bill and the EU's AI Act. The firm expects the unit to generate new revenue streams while deepening relationships with existing clients.
Gold's successor as managing partner has not yet been announced. The firm stated that the transition will be smooth, with Gold continuing to oversee key client relationships during the handover period.
