A man who carried out a horrific and unprovoked knife attack on two strangers at a South London Tube station has been sentenced to 11 years in prison.
A Night of Unprovoked Violence
Nicholas Orlando Green, a 36-year-old from Kennington Park Road, launched the frenzied assault at Kennington Underground Station on March 27 last year. The court heard that his two victims, aged 44 and 42, had just attended a local dance class and were waiting on separate platforms at around 10.30pm.
Green tapped into the station using a bank card and, within seconds, began his attack. He first targeted the 44-year-old man, stabbing him repeatedly for around 20 seconds with a knife clenched in his right hand. The violence continued even after the victim collapsed onto the platform floor.
Bravery and Further Assault
Hearing the disturbance, the second victim rushed over to try and help. Green then turned on him, attacking him in the same brutal manner and knocking him to the ground. The assault was only stopped when courageous members of the public intervened, forcing Green to back away.
Green then left the platform, entering a lift where he assaulted a 31-year-old woman before finally exiting the station. Both stabbing victims were rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The 44-year-old man suffered multiple stab wounds to his chest and a fractured arm. The 42-year-old victim was stabbed a total of 13 times.
Investigation and Conviction
Detectives from the British Transport Police quickly identified Green from the bank card he used to enter the station. He was arrested at his Kennington flat the following day. During a search, officers found the card, the trainers he wore during the attack, and a freshly washed jacket.
In September, Green was found guilty at Inner London Crown Court of two counts of Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent. He was also convicted of one count of Possession of a Bladed Article and one count of Common Assault. On Thursday, December 4, he was handed an 11-year prison sentence.
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Attwell said: "This was a truly horrific and unprovoked attack that left two innocent men with life-altering physical and psychological injuries that they continue to recover from." He noted that Green had shown no remorse, repeatedly laughing, lying, and arguing during police interviews in an attempt to frustrate the investigation.
DCI Attwell added: "I hope this sentencing brings some measure of justice and reassurance to the victims and their loved ones. We will stop at nothing to ensure violent offenders like Green are held to account and removed from the streets."
