Kyiv hit by ballistic missiles; civilians killed in drone strikes

A Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv early Sunday wounded at least two people, the city's administration said, after warning residents to take shelter. Explosions and flashes in the sky were reported, and several fires broke out in the Darnytsky district, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the local military administration. Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters as air defence forces operated.

Civilian deaths on both sides of the border

The attack follows civilian deaths on both sides of the Russia-Ukraine border on Saturday. Russian strikes in Dnipropetrovsk in central-eastern Ukraine and the northern Sumy region killed two people. Meanwhile, Ukraine launched attacks on Volgograd and Belgorod in Russia's southwest, and Horlivka in the Donetsk region, which is controlled by Moscow. Three people were killed in those attacks, regional authorities said.

Drone strikes in Russian regions

In the Russian border region of Bryansk, a Ukrainian drone strike on Saturday killed two people in their car in a village near the border, according to acting governor Yegor Kovalchuk. Russia's defence ministry said 124 Ukrainian drones had been downed over Russian regions between 8 am and 8 pm. A massive drone strike also hit the Krasnodar region in southern Russia, killing one person, wounding another, and causing a fire at an oil refinery. Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported that several houses were damaged by falling debris, and a power line and gas pipe were damaged.

Drone strikes in Ukraine

More than 40 drone strikes and artillery fire killed one person and injured one near Nikopol in the southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region, according to Governor Oleksandr Ganzha. Nikopol lies on the opposite bank of the Dnipro River from the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and is a frequent target.

Serbian president announces resignation

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Saturday he would resign within weeks, and the country would hold early presidential and parliamentary elections after 18 months of anti-government protests over corruption and media censorship. Serbia is a candidate to join the European Union but has declined to align with EU sanctions on Russia. It must also improve rule of law and root out corruption.

Putin and Lukashenko meet

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko held talks on Friday at Putin's Valdai residence, focusing on the war in Ukraine, trade, economic cooperation, joint projects, and regional security. The meeting follows a warning from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Lukashenko to remove equipment used by Russia in its attacks on Ukraine.
