Ice Rink Shooting Spree Halted by Good Samaritan in Rhode Island

A deadly shooting at a US ice rink was brought to a swift end by a Good Samaritan among the spectators, according to police authorities in Rhode Island. The tragic incident unfolded at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, near Providence, on Monday afternoon, where a youth hockey game was scheduled to take place.

Three Fatalities and Multiple Critical Injuries

Police Chief Tina Goncalves confirmed that three people, including the suspect, lost their lives in the shooting. The suspect, identified as Robert Dorgan, also known as Roberta Esposito, shot dead two adults and critically injured three other individuals before turning the gun on himself. Dorgan, born in 1969, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

One victim was found deceased inside the arena, while another succumbed to injuries at the hospital. The three other shooting victims remain in critical condition, receiving medical treatment for their gunshot wounds.

Good Samaritan Intervention

Chief Goncalves revealed that an unnamed Good Samaritan among the spectators intervened during the shooting, bringing the violent spree to a swift conclusion. While specific details about the intervention were not disclosed, unverified social media footage showed a man throwing himself at Dorgan to stop the attack.

The shooting occurred around 2:30 PM local time, with several people inside the arena at that moment. The incident was captured on a live stream of the hockey game, adding to the traumatic experience for those involved.

Targeted Family Dispute

Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from a targeted family dispute, though they did not reveal who was specifically targeted or the exact reasons behind the attack. "It appears that this was a targeted event, that it may be a family dispute," Chief Goncalves stated during her briefing to the press.

Players and spectators raced for cover after hearing popping sounds at the venue, creating a scene of chaos and fear. Tearful families and high school hockey players still in their kits could be seen hugging outside the arena after the shooting, while police cordoned off the ice rink for investigation.

Community in Mourning

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee expressed profound grief over the incident, stating, "Our state is grieving again. As governor, a parent, and a former coach, my heart breaks for the victims, families, students, and everyone impacted by the devastating shooting at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket."

This tragic event comes almost two months after another shooting incident in nearby Providence, where a gunman killed three people at Brown University before taking his own life. The community now faces another round of mourning and reflection on gun violence in public spaces.
