Grenfell Tower Fire: Remembering 72 Victims Nine Years On
Grenfell Tower Fire: Remembering 72 Victims Nine Years On

Nine years on from the Grenfell Tower disaster, it remains one of the darkest days in London's history. The fire broke out in the early hours of June 14, 2017, claiming 72 lives. A kitchen fire on the fourth floor spread rapidly due to combustible cladding, engulfing the entire building within hours.

Remembering the Victims

Many residents had moved to London seeking a better life. Victims ranged from a stillborn baby to an 84-year-old great-grandmother. The Grenfell Inquiry's final report, published in September 2024, concluded that cladding was a key factor and that some residents were told to stay put. The Met Police may decide on criminal charges before the 10th anniversary, with 57 individuals and 20 organisations under investigation.
