Public Alert: Escaped Prisoner with Croydon Links on the Run
Members of the public are being urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid approaching an escaped prisoner who has been at large for more than 48 hours. Darnell Smith, aged 27, managed to abscond from HMP Springhill, an open prison located near Grendon Underwood in West Buckinghamshire, close to the Oxfordshire border.
The escape occurred at approximately 11.30am on Wednesday, January 28, but Thames Valley Police only issued a public appeal regarding the incident at 1.25pm on Friday, January 30. This delay in notification has heightened concerns as Smith remains unlawfully at large.
Distinctive Appearance and Last Known Details
Darnell Smith is described as being around 5 feet 8 inches tall with a medium build. He was last seen wearing all-black clothing, which may aid in his identification. Notably, Smith has previously been photographed with his hair tied up in bunches, a distinctive hairstyle that could make him more recognisable to the public.
Police have emphasised that Smith should not be approached under any circumstances due to potential risks. Instead, anyone who spots him is instructed to call 999 immediately to report his whereabouts.
Criminal Background and Geographic Links
Smith was serving a prison sentence for serious offences, including possession with intent to supply a Class A controlled drug and exploitation. His criminal history underscores the importance of public vigilance in this case.
Investigators have identified that Smith has known links to several areas, primarily in London. These include Croydon and Plumstead, as well as parts of Surrey and Sussex. Residents in these regions are advised to be particularly alert and report any suspicious sightings without delay.
Police Appeal and Contact Information
Leading the search is Police Staff Investigator Evelina Kersyte from the Prison Crime Team, who stated: “We are appealing for the help of the public to trace Darnell Smith, who is unlawfully at large after escaping from HMP Springhill. If you see Smith, do not approach him and call 999 instead.”
For those with non-urgent information about Smith's possible location, police can be contacted on 101 or via an online report, quoting reference number 43260045393. Alternatively, individuals wishing to remain anonymous can reach out to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
This ongoing manhunt involves coordinated efforts between Thames Valley Police and prison authorities to recapture Smith and ensure public safety. The community's cooperation is crucial in aiding these efforts and preventing any further incidents.
