Duane Owusu, a 36-year-old resident of Althorne Way in Dagenham, has been found guilty of the murder of 27-year-old Zahwa Mukhtar in a shocking case that unfolded in East London. On the night of Saturday, August 16, Zahwa Mukhtar met Duane Owusu while both were out in Hackney. She later joined Owusu and his friends in a car. At approximately 4:30 am, an argument erupted, leading Owusu to throw Zahwa out of the vehicle on Chadwell Heath Lane in Dagenham. In a further act of aggression, he exited the car, punched her, and then swiftly re-entered the vehicle, fleeing the scene and leaving her unconscious.
Passers-by discovered Zahwa and immediately alerted emergency services. Despite efforts by paramedics and police who performed CPR, she was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination revealed she had sustained a fractured skull and a severe brain injury, directly attributable to the assault.
Investigation and Evidence
Earlier that evening, police had conducted a routine stop on the car Owusu was traveling in, discovering a small quantity of drugs.
