Ealing crash: Man arrested after 5 injured

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a vehicle struck multiple pedestrians on a busy West London road and then drove away, police confirmed. The incident occurred on Ealing Broadway at around 2:30 p.m. on June 27, leaving five people injured.

Injuries and hospital treatment

Three of the five injured individuals were taken to hospital by paramedics, according to the London Ambulance Service. One patient was transported to a major trauma centre by road as a priority, while the other two were taken to a local hospital. Paramedics assessed two additional people at the scene. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening or life-changing.

The London Ambulance Service dispatched multiple resources, including ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response cars, a volunteer emergency responder crew, an incident response officer, and London’s Air Ambulance.

Police investigation and arrest

The driver did not remain at the scene but was stopped in nearby Grange Park a short time later, the Metropolitan Police stated. A Somalia-born British man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and attempted murder.

Counter Terrorism Policing London conducted initial inquiries, but the Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident is not being treated as terrorism. The force said: “Due to the nature of the incident, local officers were in contact with officers from Counter Terrorism Policing London as they conducted their initial enquiries. While investigators are keeping an open mind as to any potential motive, the incident is not being treated as terrorism.”

Witness accounts and road closures

Footage circulating online appears to show bystanders running alongside a white car, kicking it, and attempting to open the driver-side door before it speeds away. Alexander Stafford, who served as a councillor for Ealing Broadway between 2014 and 2021, described the scenes as “absolutely horrific.” Writing on X, he said: “Absolutely horrific news from Ealing Broadway - as a councillor I used to represent this area and used to work in that very M&S. Praying for a speedy recovery for all the injured.”

Road closures were in place on The Broadway for several hours but have since reopened to traffic in both directions. Police advised that closures could remain in place for some time as the investigation progresses.
