Clive Emson, the legendary auctioneer from BBC's Homes Under the Hammer, has died at the age of 79. The beloved television personality passed away peacefully on Wednesday, surrounded by his family.
A Life Remembered
Emson was best known for his regular appearances on the popular BBC property show, where he became famous for his catchphrase 'Have gavel, will travel'. He founded Clive Emson Land and Property Auctioneers, a business that expanded from Kent to Cornwall, including the Isle of Wight.
News of his death was first reported by Kent Online, which described his peaceful passing. In 2019, Emson was awarded an MBE for his charitable work supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged young people in Kent.
Early Career and Legacy
Emson began his career as a junior estate agent, earning just £1.50 a week. He left school at the age of 16 and later admitted in an interview that his early years were challenging. 'It was not the best time of my life, and I was a nightmare for them,' he told the local publication.
Tributes have flooded in from fans and colleagues, who remembered him as a true gentleman. On Facebook, David Naghi wrote: 'Very sad to hear of his passing. A real gentleman and a really nice bloke.' Jim Ogilvie added: 'An absolute gentleman with a wonderful character.' Dee Ford shared: 'I've known Clive since my very first days of training to be a surveyor, an absolute gentleman, and a huge character in life and work.'
Metro has contacted Clive Emson's representatives and the BBC for comment. More tributes are expected as the news spreads.
