A 76-year-old man who operated a summer camp has admitted to drugging his wife so he could sexually assault children without her knowledge, following a series of disturbing revelations in court.
Guilty Pleas to Multiple Offences
John Ruben, from Melton Mowbray, previously pleaded guilty to 17 charges related to attacks on two children and the lacing of sweets with sedatives at Stathern Lodge summer camp this summer. In a recent court appearance, he further admitted to administering drugs to his wife, Susan Ruben, between July 26 and 29 last year, with the intent of keeping her unconscious while he abused young victims.
Details of the Abuse at Camp
The court heard that Ruben ran the camp for at least 27 years, marketing it as a safe haven for children aged eight to 11. However, prosecutor Mary Prior KC described how he engaged children in a sweet game, encouraging them to consume tainted treats quickly. This manipulative tactic was part of a broader pattern of abuse that included sexual assault and child cruelty towards six other victims.
Discovery and Evidence
Concerns were raised when Ruben's stepson became suspicious and searched his belongings, uncovering items such as baby oil, Vaseline, and syringes. Subsequent police investigations revealed that Ruben possessed over 50 Category A indecent videos of children, representing the most severe classification for such material.
In total, Ruben has admitted to a range of charges, including sexual assault of a child under 13, assault by penetration, eight counts of child cruelty, three counts of making indecent images, and four drug-related offences.
Sentencing and Apology
Presiding judge Timothy Spencer KC indicated that a significant prison sentence is imminent, with sentencing set for February 6. Ruben responded in court, Yes your honour, I understand that, and expressed remorse by saying, I'm so sorry after entering his guilty plea.
The case has shocked the local community, highlighting the vulnerabilities in settings billed as educational or recreational for children. Stathern Lodge, which hosts residential holidays for up to 70 children, is now under scrutiny as authorities review safety protocols.
