Sir Keir Burnham has confirmed he will announce his cabinet on Monday, pushing back against criticism over the delay by arguing that early decisions would cause "chaos." In a speech, the incoming prime minister defended his approach, stating that appointments should be made after entering Downing Street.
Cabinet Announcement Set for Monday
Burnham stated that he is finalizing his decisions and will reveal his top team on Monday. "I am finalising those decisions, and I will come to conclusions very shortly, and then I will announce those on Monday," he said. He emphasized that this is the normal and orderly way to proceed, rejecting calls for earlier transparency.
Defence of the Delay
When asked why he had not yet chosen his cabinet, Burnham explained that doing so prematurely would disrupt the transition. "Because you do that when you do take over. You make those decisions, and it would be somewhat premature and would I think cause complete chaos if you start half a reshuffle before you’re in the position," he said. He added that while there is much speculation, waiting until he is officially in office ensures proper decision-making.
Chancellor Decision Pending
Burnham also addressed questions about who will serve as chancellor, noting that he is still finalizing that choice. He reiterated that the announcement will come on Monday, following the standard procedure for a new government.
