Bath Mayor Issues Unreserved Apology Over Controversial Social Media Posts
The Mayor of Bath, Dr Bharat Pankhania, has expressed profound regret and issued a full apology after sharing social media posts that described the arson attack on Jewish community ambulances in Golders Green as a fraudulent act. The incident, which involved the burning of four ambulances operated by the volunteer-led service Hatzola, has sparked widespread condemnation.
Mayor's Actions and Immediate Response
Dr Pankhania, who serves as a Liberal Democrat councillor on Bath and North East Somerset Council, initially reposted content on his personal X account that labeled the arson an "Israeli false flag operation" and questioned why the Jewish community maintains private ambulances in the UK. These posts have since been deleted by the mayor.
In a subsequent statement on X, Dr Pankhania referred to the shared posts as "abhorrent" and stated they do not align with his personal values and beliefs. He emphasized his deep remorse, saying, "I am incredibly apologetic that I have not lived up to the standards I set myself. I have of course deleted them, and I wish to apologise unreservedly."
Details of the Arson Attack and Its Impact
The arson attack occurred earlier this week, resulting in the complete destruction of four ambulances belonging to Hatzola North West. The vehicles, which contained gas canisters, exploded after being set alight, causing significant damage to the surrounding area.
- Nearby homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure due to the explosions.
- Residents reported being awakened by the noise, with the force of the blasts shattering windows, including those of a nearby synagogue.
- Hatzola, established in London following incidents where Jewish individuals died while waiting for ambulances, provides emergency medical assistance to anyone in its operational area, regardless of religious affiliation.
Police Investigation and Community Reactions
Two men, aged 47 and 45 and both of British nationality, were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. They have since been released on police bail as the investigation continues. The attack has raised serious concerns about community safety and the targeting of charitable services.
The mayor's apology comes amid growing scrutiny of public figures' social media activity and its potential to amplify harmful narratives. Dr Pankhania's swift retraction and public contrition aim to address the offense caused by his initial sharing of the posts, which many found deeply insensitive and inflammatory.
