North London Synagogue Targeted in Arson Attack as Anti-Semitic Violence Escalates
A synagogue in north London has been targeted in an overnight arson attack, marking the latest in a disturbing series of incidents against Jewish sites in the capital. Police and fire crews responded to an attempted firebombing at Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow, where minor smoke damage was reported in an internal room. Fortunately, there were no injuries and no significant structural damage, according to the Community Security Trust (CST).
Recent Spate of Attacks on Jewish Community
This attack follows a pattern of violence targeting the Jewish community in London. Just days earlier, a synagogue in Finchley was struck by petrol bombs, and on Saturday, a Jewish business in Hendon was also subjected to an arson attack. In March, three individuals were charged in connection with an arson attack on Haztola ambulances, a charity-owned service in Golders Green.
A spokesperson for the CST expressed gratitude for the rapid response from the Metropolitan Police and London Fire Brigade, stating, "We want to thank the Met Police and London Fire Brigade for responding quickly and for all they are doing to protect the Jewish community during this unprecedented period." The CST is supporting the affected location and collaborating closely with police investigations to identify those responsible.
Community Leaders Issue Grave Warnings
Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis issued a stark warning, noting that a "sustained campaign of violence and intimidation against the Jewish community of the UK is gathering momentum." He emphasized that these attacks threaten not only the Jewish community but the fundamental values of society, adding, "Thank God, no lives have been lost, but we cannot, and must not, wait for that to change before we understand just how dangerous this moment is for all of our society."
London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned the attacks, asserting, "There is no place for anti-semitism in our city, and the perpetrators of these despicable attacks will face the full force of the law. London will always stand united against those seeking to divide us." He confirmed that the Met Police have increased their presence in the area to enhance security.
Calls for Vigilance and Action
The CST has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately to the police on 999, followed by a report to CST. A spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism described the situation as "terrifyingly becoming a spate of daily arson attacks on the Jewish community," criticizing what they see as a failure by state authorities to address anti-Semitic extremism effectively.
This incident underscores a growing concern over safety and security for Jewish institutions in London, with community leaders calling for stronger measures to combat hate crimes and protect vulnerable groups.
