Police Release Video of Officers with Girls in Rotherham

South Yorkshire Police have released video footage showing officers interacting with teenage girls in Rotherham as part of an ongoing investigation into historical child sexual exploitation. The footage, which has been made public following a request from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), is believed to date from the early 2000s.

Footage Details

The video captures police officers in conversation with young girls in various locations across Rotherham. In one clip, an officer is seen speaking to a girl who appears distressed. Another shows officers in a patrol car with two teenagers. The force has stated that the release aims to encourage anyone with information about the identities of those involved to come forward.

According to South Yorkshire Police, the footage was discovered during a review of archived materials related to the Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal. The scandal, which came to light in 2014, revealed that an estimated 1,400 children were abused between 1997 and 2013, with authorities failing to act on intelligence.

Investigation Context

The IOPC is currently investigating the conduct of former police officers and staff in relation to their handling of child sexual exploitation cases in Rotherham. The release of the video is part of efforts to identify potential victims and witnesses who have not yet come forward.

Assistant Chief Constable David Hartley said: “We are releasing this footage in the hope that it may jog someone’s memory. We want to identify the girls in the video and ensure they receive the support they need. We also want to understand the context of these interactions and whether any further action is required.”

Public Appeal

The force has set up a dedicated phone line and email address for anyone who recognises the girls or has information about the incidents depicted. The IOPC has urged anyone with concerns about the conduct of officers in the footage to contact them directly.

Rotherham MP Sarah Champion commented: “This video is a stark reminder of the failures of the past. It is crucial that we now do everything possible to support victims and hold those responsible to account.”

The release of the footage has been met with mixed reactions, with some victim support groups praising the transparency while others express concern about the potential distress it may cause to those depicted.
