DNA Evidence in Nancy Guthrie Abduction Fails to Provide Leads
An investigation into the abduction of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of television host Savannah Guthrie, has hit a dead end after DNA found on a glove near her home yielded no matches in federal databases. The search for Guthrie, who disappeared three weeks ago, continues with no significant breakthroughs.
Glove DNA Analysis Reveals No Database Hits
On Tuesday, officials confirmed that unknown male DNA discovered on a glove approximately two miles from Nancy Guthrie's residence did not result in any new leads. The FBI had previously stated that the glove resembled one worn by the abductor in surveillance footage from the night of Guthrie's disappearance.
Chris Nanos, the Pima County Sheriff, reported that the DNA sample was submitted to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) but produced no matches. "We're hopeful that we're always getting closer, but the news now is that CODIS had no hits," Nanos said. He also noted that the DNA did not match any samples collected from Guthrie's home.
Investigation Shifts to Genealogy Databases
With no matches in the FBI's database, authorities are now likely to enter the DNA into commercial genealogy databases in an effort to identify potential suspects. This move comes as the investigation stretches into its third week, with law enforcement agencies intensifying their efforts to locate Guthrie.
Family and Public Figures Appeal for Information
Savannah Guthrie, a prominent TV anchor and Nancy's daughter, issued a public plea on Monday, urging anyone involved in her mother's disappearance to "do the right thing" and return her home. "It is never too late," she emphasized, highlighting the family's distress over the ongoing case.
Former President Donald Trump also commented on the situation, stating in an interview with the New York Post that he would advocate for the death penalty if Nancy Guthrie was killed. He described the consequences for the abductors as "very, very severe – the most severe," confirming his reference to capital punishment when questioned.
The case remains active, with authorities exploring all available avenues to solve the abduction. The lack of DNA matches underscores the challenges faced in the investigation, as the community and family await further developments.
