Syed Hussain Ahmed, a newly-elected Labour councillor for Beckton ward in Newham, appeared in court on June 19 charged with sexual assault. The alleged incident occurred on October 8, 2025, in the City of London, and was reported to police on January 7, 2026. Ahmed was arrested on March 4, charged on May 15—just a week after his election on May 7—and pleaded not guilty at Inner London Crown Court on Friday, July 17. He has been released under conditions and is scheduled to appear again on December 13, 2027.
Labour suspension and independent status
The Labour Party has suspended Ahmed, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS). Newham Council confirmed that as of Wednesday, July 15, Ahmed now sits as an independent councillor. The council's website states he will not host any surgeries until further notice.
A Newham Council spokesperson said: “Councillor Syed Hussain Ahmed was elected in May to represent the Beckton ward. From July 15, Cllr Ahmed now sits as an independent member.” Both Ahmed and the Labour Party have been contacted for comment.
