Former television star John Alford has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison for sexually assaulting two teenage girls. The 54-year-old actor, best known for his role in the ITV drama London's Burning, was found guilty of the offences following a trial at St Albans Crown Court.
The Details of the Assaults
The court heard that the attacks took place during a party at a friend's home in April 2022. In the early hours of the morning, Alford bought approximately £250 worth of food, alcohol, and cigarettes from a petrol station. This included a bottle of vodka which was consumed by the victims.
Alford, who was charged under his real name John Shannon, then had sexual intercourse with the 14-year-old girl in the garden and later in a downstairs toilet. He also inappropriately touched the 15-year-old victim as she lay half asleep on a living room sofa.
Courtroom Reaction and Denial
Throughout the proceedings, Alford denied all charges against him. However, the jury returned guilty verdicts in September. When the verdicts were read out in court, Alford put his head in his hand and shouted, "Wrong, I didn't do this."
The actor first rose to fame in the popular children's television series Grange Hill before securing his notable role in the firefighter drama London's Burning.
Sentencing and Aftermath
On Wednesday 14 January 2026, the judge at St Albans Crown Court handed down the custodial sentence of eight years and six months. The case has drawn significant public attention due to Alford's former celebrity status.
The police investigation, led by Hertfordshire Police, built a strong evidential case which ultimately led to his conviction. This sentencing marks the conclusion of a case that has lasted nearly four years since the offences were committed.
