A former City of London Police officer who stole £50,000 in cash and harassed his girlfriend has been placed on the industry's barred list, preventing him from ever working in policing again.
Details of the Case
Christopher Trowton pleaded guilty to harassment and burglary at Kingston Crown Court in February 2025. He was arrested and charged by the Metropolitan Police in 2022. Trowton resigned from the City of London Police in June 2022. In December 2025, he was sentenced to 43 months in prison for burglary and 21 weeks concurrent for harassment. A 10-year restraining order was also issued.
Misconduct Hearing
At a misconduct hearing on May 12, 2026, City of London Police Commissioner Peter O'Doherty found Trowton had breached professional standards of authority, respect, courtesy, honesty, and integrity, amounting to gross misconduct. Commissioner O'Doherty stated that Trowton's actions brought the force into disrepute and that continued service would have been untenable.
In his written decision, Commissioner O'Doherty said: "In making my decision I have had regard to the guidance issued by the College of Policing on outcomes in police misconduct proceedings. I have considered all relevant documents including any mitigations and responses you may have made. However, your criminal conviction and associated custodial sentence undermines the trust and confidence that the public are entitled to place in police officers. Although you have resigned from the police service, having considered all of the circumstances, I am satisfied that the conduct amounts to gross misconduct. The seriousness of the offence and the resulting criminal conviction would make continued service as a police officer untenable. In order to maintain public confidence and uphold the integrity of the police service, the appropriate and proportionate outcome would have been dismissal without notice. I therefore find that you would have been dismissed and direct that your details be placed on the barred list."
Barred List and Future Implications
Trowton's name will remain on the College of Policing's barred list for five years, after which he may apply for removal. Detective Superintendent Thomas Hill, Head of the Professional Standards Department at the City of London Police, commented: "In December 2025, former City of London Police officer Christopher Trowton was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison for burglary and harassment. An accelerated misconduct hearing was held on May 12, 2026 at which it was determined that had he still been a serving police officer, Trowton would have been dismissed. His name will be placed on the barred list to prevent him from obtaining any future policing role."
The case highlights the commitment of City of London Police to uphold professional standards and maintain public trust in law enforcement.
