Channel 4 in Crisis Talks Over MAFS UK Sexual Assault Allegations
Channel 4 Crisis Talks Over MAFS UK Assault Claims

Channel 4 executives have reportedly convened emergency crisis talks following a BBC Panorama investigation into the broadcaster's hit reality show Married At First Sight UK (MAFS UK), which has led to all previous seasons being pulled from streaming platforms. The documentary, aired on Monday night, featured allegations from two women who claimed they were raped while filming the dating series, alongside a third woman's account of being assaulted.

Panic Among Channel 4 Bosses

According to the Daily Mail, senior figures at Channel 4 were described as 'panicked' after the Panorama film, in which former MAFS UK star Shona Manderson called for the show to be cancelled. The broadcaster's top brass were locked in crisis talks last night, particularly after it emerged that episodes featuring one couple were aired despite producers being aware of the allegations.

Woman's Harrowing Account

One woman, who chose to remain anonymous, told Panorama that her onscreen husband raped her and threatened her with an acid attack. She is now reportedly pursuing legal action against independent production company CPL, which produces MAFS UK for Channel 4. During the BBC programme, she described 'freezing with fear' during the alleged attack, which left visible fingerprints where he had grabbed her. None of the women who spoke to the BBC have reported their allegations to the police.

Channel 4's Response

In April, Channel 4 announced it had commissioned an external review into contributor welfare after being presented with 'serious allegations of wrongdoing against a small number of past contributors', noting that those contributors have denied the allegations. In a statement on Monday, the broadcaster said: 'The channel is mindful of the privacy and continuing duty of care towards all contributors, and cannot comment on or disclose details of those allegations. Related to those allegations, Channel 4 was asked to respond to claims of failures in welfare protocols. Channel 4 believes that when concerns related to contributor welfare were raised through existing welfare and production protocols, prompt and appropriate action was taken, based on the information available at the time. Channel 4 strongly refutes any claim to the contrary.'

Welfare Protocols Under Scrutiny

Channel 4 maintains that MAFS UK is produced under 'some of the most comprehensive and robust welfare protocols in the industry', including background checks, a code of conduct setting out behavioural standards, and daily contributor check-ins with a specialist welfare team. The two-part external review will involve law firm Clyde & Co investigating welfare protocols and the handling of the claims, while former BBC One Controller Lorraine Heggessey will lead an examination of current contributor welfare measures. The review is expected to report in the coming months, and Channel 4 will share a summary of findings and recommendations.
