Trump Blocks Women's Tennis Team in White House Photo

Donald Trump posed for a photo with the University of Georgia's women's tennis team in a way that many described as quintessentially Trumpian. The President stood on a platform, towering over the eleven members of the Georgia Bulldogs, who had won the NCAA championship. In the image, Trump gave a thumbs up while the coaching staff stood beside him, and the players were positioned behind.

Trump's Comments on the Team

Trump praised the team, saying, 'What a great job. That's not easy, winning in tennis. That's a tough thing to do. I play tennis a little bit, not quite at that level, not quite, but that's a great achievement.' However, the photo's composition drew immediate criticism online.

Social Media Backlash

Hundreds of social media users pointed out the awkward positioning. One wrote, 'I can barely see the women… This is embarrassing, and the image is a great visual representation of the Republican Party's attitudes towards women.' Another asked, 'Why are the actual players all in the back? Shouldn't they be promoted first?' A third user commented, 'I'm so confused. I thought you guys wanted men OUT of women's sports,' referencing Trump's ongoing campaign against transgender athletes.

Context of Trump's Executive Order

Shortly after retaking office last year, Trump threatened schools that did not comply with his executive order banning transgender athletes. The order, titled 'Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports,' directs U.S. agencies to withdraw federal funding from non-compliant schools. In February, surrounded by young female athletes, Trump declared, 'From now on, women's sports will be only for women.' He added, 'The radical left has waged an all-out campaign to erase the very concept of biological sex and replace it with a militant transgender ideology. With this executive order the war on women's sports is over.' Trump alleged that 'men claiming to be girls' have 'stolen' more than 3,500 victories and 'invaded' more than 11,000 competitions designed for women.
