Australia's former governor general and Anglican archbishop of Brisbane, Peter Hollingworth, has died at the age of 91. He passed away on Tuesday, as confirmed by church officials.
Life and Career
Hollingworth served as the Anglican archbishop of Brisbane for 11 years from 1990, becoming the first Australian-born person to hold that position. He was appointed governor general in 2001 by then-Prime Minister John Howard, using his role to advocate for Indigenous rights and disadvantaged communities. However, his tenure was cut short due to controversy over his handling of child sexual abuse allegations within the church.
Resignation and Investigations
In 2003, a board of inquiry found that Hollingworth, as archbishop, failed to act on knowledge of abuse, allowing two priests who had sexually assaulted children to remain in the church. He resigned from the governor general position that same year. A subsequent church inquiry in 2023 concluded that he had committed misconduct but remained fit for ministry. Hollingworth accepted the findings, stating he made mistakes but committed no crimes. He was never accused of abusing children himself.
Reactions and Legacy
Anglican Archbishop of Brisbane Jeremy Greaves expressed condolences to Hollingworth's family and acknowledged the church's past failings, apologizing unreservedly to abuse survivors. Hollingworth was named Australian of the Year in 1991 for his work fighting poverty. In 2023, he announced he would no longer practice as an Anglican priest to end distress for survivors.
