Oscar-winning director Pavel Talankin's Best Documentary statuette for 'Mr. Nobody Against Putin' has vanished during a flight from New York to Frankfurt, overshadowing his historic win. The award, symbolizing his undercover work in Russia, was last seen at JFK Airport's Terminal 1.
Security Screening Incident
On April 30, TSA agents at JFK flagged the 8.5lb (3.8kg) statuette as a potential weapon during routine screening, despite Talankin having flown with it a dozen times since March without issue. Officials barred it from the cabin due to its physical density.
Lufthansa staff attempted compromises, including holding the statuette personally or storing it in the cockpit, but TSA refused. A proposal for a supervisor to keep it onboard was overruled. Talankin faced an ultimatum: check the Oscar under the plane or it would not fly.
Disappearance in Frankfurt
Under supervision, the statuette was bubble-wrapped, taped, and tagged for cargo hold transport. Talankin boarded with only a ticket number and video proof. Upon landing in Frankfurt, the package failed to appear on the baggage carousel.
Executive producer Robin Hessman confirmed the flight arrived on schedule, but the award had vanished. The documentary, capturing two years of high-risk undercover footage, forced Talankin to flee Russia in 2024.
Ongoing Investigation
Lufthansa issued a statement treating the matter with 'utmost care and urgency' through an internal search. Co-director David Borenstein questioned whether a more famous English-speaking actor would have received different treatment. The film community is pressuring the carrier and US officials for resolution. The Academy can replace statuettes in rare cases, but the original remains missing.
