Armed Forces veterans living in a West London borough are set to receive a significant financial boost, with a new council tax discount approved for the coming year.
Financial Recognition for Service
Hammersmith and Fulham Council has confirmed that veterans will be eligible for a 25 per cent discount on their council tax bills from April 2026. The measure, which was expected to be formally approved by the Cabinet on Monday, January 19, is described as a gesture of gratitude for their service.
The council stated the move was made "in recognition of the brave service of our nation's Armed Forces" and also marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day, which was commemorated last year. A council report emphasised that the policy "reflects our deep gratitude to those who have served our country."
Eligibility and Application Details
To qualify for the discount, veterans must reside in the borough and hold a valid HM Armed Forces Veteran Card that was issued before May 31, 2025. The council announced the initiative in May 2025 and asked veterans to complete an expression of interest form by September 30, 2025.
It is important to note that completing this form did not automatically guarantee the discount. The 25 per cent reduction will apply for the 2026-27 council tax billing period.
Contrast with Neighbouring Borough
This supportive move stands in stark contrast to decisions made in the neighbouring Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. There, the council has voted to cut council tax relief for its most vulnerable working-age residents by 10 per cent, a change also taking effect in the 2026/27 financial year.
Kensington and Chelsea Council blamed a reduction in government funding and a need to address a £108 million budget shortfall. The change means approximately 5,000 residents will begin paying council tax for the first time, contributing between £123 and £164 annually. Pensioners are not affected by this cut.
Meanwhile, Hammersmith and Fulham has committed to continuing to provide 100 per cent support for its most vulnerable residents, despite government funding cuts. The council notes it is one of only a few local authorities maintaining this level of support.
The total cost of the council tax relief scheme in Hammersmith and Fulham is estimated at £14.67 million for the 2026/27 financial year. This cost is shared with the Greater London Authority (GLA), with the local council covering £10.27 million of the total.
