Ramaswamy Wins Ohio GOP Primary, Readies for Tight Race

Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican former presidential candidate, secured victory in the Ohio gubernatorial primary on Tuesday, setting the stage for a closely watched general election battle in November. The biotech entrepreneur, endorsed by Donald Trump, defeated internet personality Casey Putsch to win the GOP nomination.

Primary Victory and Trump's Support

Ramaswamy, 40, received a late boost from Trump on Tuesday, who praised him on social media as "Young, Strong, and Smart!" He will now face Dr. Amy Acton, the Democratic nominee, in the 3 November general election. Acton, Ohio's former health director during the Covid-19 pandemic, ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Putsch, a political novice known for his "car guy" YouTube series, targeted Ramaswamy's south Asian heritage in campaign ads but was soundly defeated, garnering less than 20% of the vote.

A Competitive General Election

The upcoming contest between Ramaswamy and Acton is expected to be highly competitive and expensive. No Democrat has won the Ohio governorship since Ted Strickland in 2006, but the party remains optimistic about flipping the seat. The Cook Political Report shifted its rating of the race from "likely Republican" to "lean Republican" in March.

Outgoing Governor Mike DeWine, who is term-limited, endorsed Ramaswamy in the primary but defended Acton against Republican criticism of her pandemic-era policies, noting that decisions were made by his office.

Acton's Campaign Focus

Acton is campaigning on the high cost of living in Ohio and has criticized Ramaswamy's allegiance to Trump. She has also shared her personal story of overcoming poverty, homelessness, and sexual abuse while growing up in Youngstown. This background contrasts sharply with Ramaswamy, who became a multimillionaire in his 20s and now has a net worth of $2.4 billion from his biotech ventures, according to Forbes.

Ramaswamy's Policy Promises

If elected, Ramaswamy has pledged to make Ohio more affordable by cutting property and income taxes, advancing technology, and implementing energy reforms to lower consumer bills. He is also a strong advocate for parental rights in education. "A world-class education is the birthright of every Ohioan & we'll make sure that's what they get, from the inner cities to Appalachia," he wrote on X after his primary win.

Political Background

Ramaswamy's 2024 presidential campaign started strong but was suspended after a fourth-place finish in the Iowa caucuses. He later co-led Trump's "Department of Government Efficiency" (Doge) with Elon Musk but left the role shortly after Trump's return to the White House in January 2025, amid reports of a falling-out with Musk.

Other Ohio Primary Results

In another key primary, former U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown easily defeated Democratic rival Ron Kincaid. Brown will face Republican incumbent Jon Husted in a special election in November to serve the remainder of JD Vance's term. Brown, first elected in 2006, lost his seat in 2024 to Bernie Moreno.
