Pauline Hanson Sees Approval Boost in Essential Poll
The latest Essential Poll reveals a notable increase in approval for Pauline Hanson, leader of the One Nation party. The survey, conducted from April 28 to 30, shows Hanson's net approval rating rising by 5 percentage points, now standing at +12. This marks a significant shift from previous months, where her ratings had remained relatively stable.
Key Findings of the Poll
The poll, which surveyed 1,000 voters across Australia, indicates that Hanson's improved approval is driven largely by increased support among voters aged 55 and over, as well as those in regional areas. Among these groups, her approval jumped by 8 points. However, her ratings among younger voters and metropolitan residents remain lower, with net approval of -5 and +3 respectively.
Political analysts suggest that Hanson's recent focus on economic issues, particularly inflation and housing affordability, may be resonating with older and rural voters. "She is tapping into concerns that are not being addressed by the major parties," said Dr. Sarah Mitchell, a political scientist at the University of Sydney. "This polling suggests her message is gaining traction."
Impact on the Political Landscape
The rise in Hanson's approval comes at a time when the Coalition government is facing declining approval ratings, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's net approval dropping to -8. The One Nation leader's increasing popularity could pose challenges for both major parties, particularly in upcoming by-elections and the next federal election.
Essential Poll director John Scales noted that while Hanson's approval is still below her peak in 2020, the trend is upward. "We are seeing a realignment of voter sentiment, with Hanson picking up support from disaffected Coalition voters," he said. However, he cautioned that the sample size for some subgroups is small, so results should be interpreted with care.
The poll also shows that Hanson's disapproval rating remains high at 45%, indicating that while her support is growing, she remains a polarizing figure. The full results of the Essential Poll are available on their website.
