Zelenskyy Accuses Trump of Undue Pressure as Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks Continue
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has publicly criticized former US President Donald Trump for exerting undue pressure on Ukraine to end the war with Russia. This comes as negotiators from Ukraine and Russia gather for a second day of peace talks in Geneva, Switzerland, brokered by the United States.
Low Expectations in Geneva Negotiations
The US-brokered negotiations began on Tuesday, but expectations for any significant breakthroughs remain low. Neither side appears willing to compromise on key issues, including control of territory in eastern Ukraine and future security guarantees. Despite the US setting a June deadline for a settlement, the talks have stalled over fundamental disagreements.
Zelenskyy has hit back at Trump's recent suggestions that Ukraine must take steps to ensure the talks' success. In an interview with the US website Axios, Zelenskyy stated it is "not fair" that Trump is publicly calling on Ukraine, rather than Russia, to make concessions for peace. "I hope it is just his tactics and not the decision," Zelenskyy remarked, expressing concern over Trump's approach.
Territorial Concessions Rejected
Zelenskyy emphasized that any peace plan requiring Ukraine to give up territory not captured by Russia in the eastern Donbas region would be rejected by Ukrainians if put to a referendum. This stance underscores the deep-seated resistance to territorial compromises, which remains a major sticking point in the negotiations.
Danish King's Visit to Greenland Amid Tensions
In related news, the Danish king is set to begin a three-day visit to Greenland, demonstrating support for the autonomous Danish territory that has been coveted by Trump. The former US president's threats to seize the Arctic island by force, if necessary, have heightened diplomatic tensions between Washington and NATO member Denmark.
Trump has insisted that Greenland is essential for US national security and defence reasons. Although he has since dialled back his threats, King Frederik has expressed solidarity with Greenland, home to 58,000 people, reinforcing Denmark's commitment to the territory.
Religious Observances Across Europe
Additionally, many Christians and Muslims across Europe will be fasting side by side today as they mark the beginning of Ash Wednesday and Ramadan, respectively. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn until sunset for a month, while Christians observe a 40-day period of Lent leading up to Easter, highlighting cultural and religious diversity on the continent.
