First Official Ukraine-Russia Ceasefire Agreed for Orthodox Easter After Zelenskyy Push
Ukrainian personnel attended a blessing of Easter cakes for the army at St Mykhailivsky cathedral in Kyiv, as the nation prepared for a significant pause in hostilities. This event underscores the cultural and spiritual backdrop to a major diplomatic development in the ongoing conflict.
Ceasefire Agreement and Zelenskyy's Initiative
Ukraine and Russia appeared to be on the brink of what could be their first official theatre-wide ceasefire since the February 2022 full-scale invasion. This comes after Vladimir Putin acquiesced to concerted offers by Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a pause in hostilities to mark Orthodox Easter, observed this weekend. The 32-hour ceasefire is set to start on Saturday afternoon.
Zelenskyy responded early on Friday, stating, "Ukraine has repeatedly stated that we are ready for reciprocal steps. We proposed a ceasefire during the Easter holiday this year and will act accordingly ... People need an Easter without threats and a real move towards peace, and Russia has a chance not to return to attacks even after Easter." This marks a pivotal moment in the war, highlighting Ukraine's proactive stance in seeking temporary peace.
Kremlin's Response and Strategic Maneuvering
The Kremlin attempted to portray the initiative as its own, with a statement saying, "We assume that the Ukrainian side will follow the example of the Russian Federation. Orders have been issued for this period to cease hostilities in all directions." However, Russia left itself an opening for continuing armed action, noting that "troops are to be prepared to counter any possible provocations by the enemy, as well as any aggressive actions."
Previously in the full-scale war, there have only been unofficial, ill-defined, and patchily observed truces, or localised halts for surrenders, prisoner exchanges, handling the dead, or civilian evacuations. A limited "energy truce" was declared in March 2025 to halt strikes on oil, gas, electrical facilities, and sea targets. Moscow has also tried to unilaterally declare ceasefires, such as for celebrating the 80th anniversary of Soviet victory in World War II, while rejecting numerous previous initiatives accepted by Ukraine.
International Context and US Involvement
Considering the Trump administration's repeated and lengthy courting of Putin to no avail over the past year, the Easter truce appeared to come about with minimal US involvement. US officials remained preoccupied with the Iran war and their own tenuous ceasefire. Zelenskyy did mention in recent days that he had transmitted his truce offers to Russia via the US. Reuters reported that according to its sources, Putin's special envoy Kirill Dmitriev was in the US as of Thursday.
Putin may be seeking a reprieve as successful Ukrainian strikes have dealt a heavy blow to Russia's oil export industry, which funds the war effort. Meanwhile, Ukraine has been struggling with the impact of Russian strikes on its civilian energy grid, adding urgency to the need for a pause.
Security Incidents and Regional Tensions
In related developments, Russia's federal security service (FSB) detained a former freelancer for Radio Free Europe in Chita for treason, accusing him of cooperating with Ukraine. In Moscow, masked security service agents searched the offices of the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, barring its lawyers from entering, in an investigation linked to the illegal use of personal data.
Britain and allies, including Norway, sent warships to prevent attacks on undersea cables and pipelines as Russian submarines prowled around them earlier this year. UK defence minister John Healey accused Russia of conducting a covert operation in the High North maritime region, warning, "To President Putin, I say we see you. We see your activity over our cables and our pipelines, and you should know that any attempt to damage them will not be tolerated and will have serious consequences." Russia's embassy in London dismissed the statement as "impossible to either believe or verify," denying any threats to undersea infrastructure.
Implications and Future Outlook
This ceasefire represents a critical juncture in the Ukraine war, with potential implications for future peace negotiations. As casualties mount and US security guarantees fade, the agreement highlights the complex interplay of military, diplomatic, and economic factors shaping the conflict. The world watches closely to see if this temporary pause can pave the way for more sustained efforts towards resolution.
