UK Issues Travel Warnings for Saudi Arabia and Lebanon Amid Middle East Conflict
UK Travel Warnings for Saudi Arabia and Lebanon Updated

The UK government has issued updated travel warnings for Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, advising British citizens to avoid these countries amid escalating conflict in the Middle East. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is urging residents to stay indoors and exercise extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary.

Updated Travel Advisories and Regional Impact

This revised guidance comes as the US-Israeli war on Iran enters its sixth day, causing widespread disruption across the region. More than twenty countries, including Qatar, Turkey, and Cyprus, have received updated travel advice in recent days. The FCDO emphasizes that anyone choosing to travel against official recommendations could have their travel insurance invalidated.

Evacuation Efforts and Flight Disruptions

Flights carrying stranded UK citizens have begun arriving at Heathrow Airport, while Abu Dhabi faces ongoing air strikes. A government rescue flight and a British Airways commercial flight from Muscat were scheduled to land earlier today, but a technical issue at Oman airport delayed the chartered plane's departure.

Muscat, located approximately 300 miles by road from Dubai and Abu Dhabi, has become a crucial evacuation point as most commercial flights from the United Arab Emirates remain cancelled due to airspace restrictions. Two additional British Airways flights are planned to transport passengers from Muscat to London Heathrow on Friday and Saturday.

Specific Country Guidance

Saudi Arabia

The FCDO currently advises against all travel to Saudi Arabia, with exceptions potentially permitted for essential travel to Eastern Province and Riyadh Province, though this is strongly discouraged. UK residents are particularly warned to avoid areas within 10 kilometers of the Saudi-Yemen border.

The updated advisory highlights "regional escalation" as posing significant security risks and causing major travel disruptions throughout the area.

Lebanon

For Lebanon, the FCDO advises against all travel to several areas of Beirut and its southern suburbs, with the exception of Route 51 connecting central Beirut to Rafic International Airport. Additional restricted regions include Mount Lebanon Governorate, South and Nabatiyeh Governorates, Beqaa Governorate, Baalbek-Hermel Governorate, Akkar Governorate, and Tripoli city.

The FCDO also recommends against all but essential travel to the remainder of the Northern Governorate.

Comprehensive Travel Advisory List

The FCDO maintains its advisory against all travel to multiple countries, including Afghanistan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Mali, Niger, Palestine, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.

Additionally, the office advises against all but essential travel to Bahrain, Cuba, North Korea, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
