Report Singles Out Prominent Activists and Groups
The report specifically names streamer and pundit Hasan Piker, Amazon Labor Union founder Chris Smalls, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Isra Hirsi (daughter of US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar), New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and journalist Amy Goodman. These individuals and groups are cited for their criticism of US policy toward Cuba or their involvement in Cuba solidarity movements.
According to the report, the DSA 'serves as a particularly potent illustration of the ideological victory of Cuba’s effort to position itself as the spiritual capital of Third Worldist radicalism.' It further accuses the DSA of maintaining a 'fierce, almost religious commitment to the cause of the Cuban regime.'
Trump Administration's Broader Anti-Communist Messaging
The report aligns with President Trump's recent rhetoric, where he has frequently used the term 'communism' at political rallies and presidential engagements. The State Department, led by Secretary Marco Rubio—a vocal critic of Cuba's government and the son of Cuban immigrants—has imposed additional sanctions on Cuba, targeting its tourism ministry and several state-owned companies. These sanctions are part of a 'comprehensive push to end the Cuban regime’s malign activities,' according to the department.
