Trump to Deliver Prime-Time Address Amid Escalating US-Israel War on Iran
President Donald Trump is set to address the American public in a prime-time speech from the White House, marking his first public remarks since the United States and Israel launched a military campaign against Iran. The address comes at a critical juncture, with the Trump administration grappling with plummeting approval ratings, economic instability, and a deepening diplomatic crisis. Trump is anticipated to reassure the nation that U.S. objectives in the conflict are being achieved and outline a strategy for concluding the war, which has significantly disrupted the American economy.
Iran Denies Trump's Ceasefire Assertions
Earlier on Wednesday, Trump claimed a major diplomatic breakthrough, asserting that Iran's president had requested a ceasefire. However, Iran's foreign ministry swiftly refuted this statement, labeling it as "false" and "baseless." In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: "Iran's New Regime President, much less Radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE! We will consider when Hormuz Strait is open, free, and clear. Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!!" The Iranian government countered by accusing Washington of making "maximalist and irrational" demands, further escalating tensions.
NATO Faces Unprecedented Crisis Over Trump's Threats
In a related development, Trump declared that he is "absolutely" considering withdrawing the United States from NATO, warning that the issue is "beyond reconsideration" following the refusal of U.S. allies to participate in the war against Iran. These threats, described as the most determined to date by a former U.S. ambassador, have plunged the 77-year-old alliance into its most severe crisis ever. The potential U.S. exit from NATO could reshape global security dynamics and undermine decades of international cooperation.
Iranian President Appeals for Understanding in Open Letter
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian issued an open letter to the American people, arguing that relations between Washington and Tehran are "misunderstood" and emphasizing that Iran is not an aggressor. He stated, "The Iranian harbor no enmity toward other nations, including the people of America, Europe, or neighbouring countries," adding that portrayals of Iran as a security threat are inaccurate. Pezeshkian maintained that Tehran's actions are in self-defence rather than aggression, seeking to clarify Iran's stance amid the ongoing conflict.
Airstrike Targets Top Iranian Official in Tehran
In a significant escalation, Kamal Kharazi, a prominent foreign policy official and former Iranian foreign minister, was severely injured in an airstrike on his home in Tehran. Reports indicate that his wife was killed in the attack. Kharazi, viewed as a moderate politician and veteran policy expert who previously served as an adviser to the assassinated former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is now at the center of the conflict. Analysts suggest that his targeting may be an attempt to derail diplomatic efforts, highlighting the volatile nature of the situation as Trump prepares to speak to the nation.
