In a major international law enforcement operation, Steven Lyons, a 45-year-old Scottish man alleged to be a high-ranking member of a transnational crime syndicate, has been apprehended in Bali and is scheduled for deportation to Spain. The arrest, confirmed by Indonesian authorities, marks a significant breakthrough in a joint investigation involving police forces from Spain, Scotland, and other nations.
Arrest and Charges
Lyons was taken into custody by immigration officers at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali on Saturday, March 29, 2026, upon his arrival from Singapore. Untung Widiyatmoko, head of Interpol Indonesia, verified the arrest, stating that Lyons is wanted in both the United Kingdom and Spain for a series of serious offences.
These charges include alleged involvement in organised crime, drug trafficking, money laundering, and a murder that occurred in Spain in 2024. Lyons has been on Spain's wanted list for approximately two years following this murder case.
International Investigation
Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya emphasised that the arrest was part of a collaborative effort between Spanish and Scottish police. He described Lyons as the alleged leader of a large-scale transnational criminal organisation engaged in narcotics trafficking and money laundering activities.
According to Widiyatmoko, Lyons is accused of orchestrating a crime ring that utilised shell companies to launder money across multiple regions, including Europe and the Middle East. Specific countries implicated in these operations are Spain, Scotland, England, Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, and Turkey.
Recent Police Raids
In connection with Lyons' case, police in Scotland and Spain conducted coordinated raids last week, resulting in multiple arrests. This operation was supported by Europol, the European Union's law enforcement cooperation agency, as well as authorities from Turkey, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates.
Background and Family History
Scottish media reports indicate that Lyons has a violent past, having survived a shooting in Glasgow in 2006 that resulted in the death of his cousin. Following this incident, he relocated to Spain before eventually settling in Dubai.
In a tragic turn of events, Lyons' brother and an associate were shot and killed in May 2025 during a suspected gangland shooting at a beachfront bar in Fuengirola, southern Spain.
Deportation and Accompanions
Indonesian authorities have announced that Lyons will be extradited to Spain on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. A photograph taken on Tuesday shows him wearing an orange prisoner's suit as he is escorted by police officers in Denpasar, the capital of Bali.
Bugie Kurniawan of Bali's immigration office revealed that Lyons arrived in Bali with two companions, who are believed to still be on the island. Spain's Interpol has identified these individuals as members of the same criminal cartel, but they are not currently subject to any arrest warrants.
This case underscores the global reach of organised crime and the importance of international cooperation in combating such networks. The deportation of Lyons to Spain is expected to facilitate further legal proceedings and potentially uncover more details about the operations of this alleged criminal organisation.
