Russian Intelligence Suspected in Coordinated European Parcel Attacks

Russian military intelligence is suspected of being behind a series of "self-igniting" air freight fires across Europe, with one significant incident occurring in Birmingham. The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that an extensive investigation involving multiple countries is currently underway following several fires involving cargo shipments.

Birmingham DHL Depot Incident Linked to Continental Attacks

The fire at a DHL depot in Birmingham in July 2024 has been directly connected to other similar incidents across the European continent. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans stated that Russian military intelligence is believed to be responsible for these coordinated attacks.

According to a joint statement from European investigators, four parcels were sent from Lithuania to addresses in the United Kingdom and Poland in July 2024. One parcel caught fire in transit at Leipzig airport, another exploded inside a truck in Poland, one was seized intact, and the fourth was the Birmingham incident.

International Investigation Uncovers Network of Suspects

Eurojust, the judicial arm of the European Union, has revealed that 22 suspects have now been identified in Lithuania and Poland, all suspected of working on behalf of Russian military intelligence. The agency reported that alleged perpetrators were recruited and given instructions through an online messaging service.

Investigators discovered that tasks were divided among several suspects, who were often rewarded with cryptocurrency payments. These individuals came from various Slavic and Baltic nations and were frequently in vulnerable socio-economic situations, according to Eurojust officials.

Additional Test Packages and Interceptions

The investigation has uncovered that "test packages" were also sent to the United States and Canada, while two more parcels bound for North America were successfully intercepted in Amsterdam. This indicates a broader international scope to the suspected intelligence operation.

In the United Kingdom, a 38-year-old Romanian national was arrested last year on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence agency. Although he has been released, he remains under active investigation as part of the ongoing probe.

Strong International Cooperation in Investigation

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Evans emphasized the strength of international cooperation in this case, stating: "The strength of cooperation in this case has led us to collectively identify what we believe to be Russian military intelligence involvement in a series of incidents across Europe."

She added: "Our investigation is ongoing, and we continue to liaise closely with partners to ensure we're doing all we can to keep the sector, and the public safe. We have been clear and open about the increasing levels of demand we're seeing relating to the activity of foreign states here in the UK."

The investigation continues to develop as authorities work to uncover the full extent of the suspected Russian intelligence operation targeting European transportation infrastructure through sophisticated parcel-based attacks.
