Prince William Faces Human Rights Appeal During Saudi Arabia Visit
In a significant development, Prince William has been formally requested to address the detention of a British national during his inaugural official trip to Saudi Arabia. The appeal comes from Amnesty International, which has exclusively shared a letter with Sky News, highlighting the plight of Ahmed al-Doush, a Manchester-based father of four.
The Case of Ahmed al-Doush
Ahmed al-Doush, a senior banking analyst for Bank of America, was arrested in 2024 while returning from a holiday in Saudi Arabia with his wife and children. His detention stems from past social media posts and an alleged association with a Saudi critic in exile, allegations he firmly denies. Initially sentenced to ten years in prison, his term has since been reduced to eight years.
The impact on his family has been profound. Haydee Dijkstal, Mr al-Doush's legal representative, emphasised his core role as a provider and loving father, noting that his absence has deeply affected his wife and children. Recent concerns about his health and mental well-being have prompted his wife to appeal directly to the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.
Amnesty International's Appeal
Felix Jakens, head of campaigns at Amnesty International, explained the organisation's stance. "Given the UK's growing economic and societal ties with Saudi Arabia, a royal visit was anticipated," he stated. "As a human rights organisation, we aim to ensure human rights remain part of the dialogue. We don't expect public statements, but we hope Prince William, known for his and his wife's commitment to certain issues, might raise Ahmed's case privately."
The UK government has acknowledged involvement, with the Foreign Office confirming support for the detained British man and ongoing contact with his family and local authorities. However, the Saudi embassy has not responded to requests for comment.
Political Sensitivities and Royal Diplomacy
Prince William's three-day visit to Saudi Arabia is laden with political sensitivities.
