Coordinated Assaults Leave Dozens Dead in Northern Nigeria

At least 32 people have been killed after gunmen launched simultaneous attacks on three separate communities in northern Nigeria, according to police reports. The dawn raids targeted Tunga-Makeri, Konkoso, and Pissa, all located in the Borgu area of Niger state, on Saturday, February 14, 2026.

Details of the Attacks and Casualties

Niger State police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun confirmed that six people died in the assault on Tunga-Makeri. He added that it was not clear how many individuals had been abducted during the incident. In Konkoso, Abdullahi Adamu, a local resident, reported that 26 people were killed, describing how the attackers were "operating freely without the presence of any security." Mr. Abiodun acknowledged the attack on Konkoso but did not provide further specifics, noting that security teams have been dispatched to the scene and a rescue operation for abducted victims is underway.

Escalating Security Crisis in the Region

Security is deteriorating in the northern part of Nigeria, a West African nation where killings and kidnappings for ransom have been carried out by both Islamic militants and armed gangs. This incident follows a recent attack earlier this month in neighboring Kwara State, where 162 people died. In recent months, the US government has accused Nigerian authorities of failing to protect Christians, although such attacks affect both Christian and Muslim communities. The two nations have established a security partnership, which saw Washington carry out strikes on armed groups in Nigerian territories in December and deploy a US military force to the country.

The violence highlights ongoing challenges in the region, with local residents expressing concerns over the lack of adequate security measures to prevent such tragedies.
